Team Building Best Practices

As you may have noticed, we are in the middle of a crisis right now, (COVID-19, I’m looking at you!) and this means that business and life are both proving to be a little extra challenging to navigate right now. Which is why there has never been a better time to reflect on your team. Yes, your employees need you to lead them through the chaos right now but you also need a strong team of employees to support you so you can do your best to still get shit done.

So, how do you cultivate a strong team of people who are doing work that they are passionate about and are well equipped to do?

As an entrepreneur, one of the most important moves you can make is scaling your team, but this task can be daunting even on the most perfect of days, and let’s face it, most of our days are less than perfect right now.

At Fearless in Training, we know a bit about building kick-ass teams and we thought it was about time to pass on our knowledge to help you cultivate the very best team for you. Here are three of our top tips for intentionally growing your team:

  1. Document What You’re Doing:

As an ambitious entrepreneur, you likely exist in a constant state of having too much on your plate. Now is the perfect time to take a minute to slow down and really reflect on just how much you do. Document all the things you do every day. Is there anything you’re doing regularly that someone else could be doing so that you save time and shit still gets done?

  2. Allow for Evolution:

Change is the name of the game right now. The world we live in is constantly changing and your team is no different. If you allow your team to grow over time, you may realize that people have new skills you didn’t notice before. By finding ways to put new skills to work, your company benefits and your employees become more engaged with and excited about the work they are doing.

  3. Hire Slow, Fire Fast:

Taking your time with the hiring process can help ensure that you find the ideal person for the job. But what if you’re starting to realize that you made a mistake and accidentally hired the wrong person? During a time when a lot of people are losing their jobs, the idea of firing someone can feel insensitive and cruel. But the reality is that if they are really that wrong for the position or for your team, it isn’t just bringing the company down, it is probably bringing them down too. You can often tell if someone is a bad fit if an individual’s passion and skills aren’t aligning with what you're asking them to do. It’s a telltale sign that they aren’t thriving emotionally or professionally like they could and should be, which might mean that it’s time for you as a leader to make the tough call to cut them loose.

Practicing these three strategies will help you build a team that is ready to support you just as much as you support them. With the right team, it is infinitely easier to power through the current chaos and keeps your business moving forward.

While these tips are powerful, they are even stronger when paired with the rest of our best practices for team building. If you want even more best practices for team building, click here to download our full (free!) guide to intentionally growing your team.
