The Pricing Activity That Makes Everyone Cry

Leading the “Big Number” activity at Pricing for Prosperity multiple years in a row has been one of the highlights of my life.

Pricing for Prosperity was never part of my “business plan.” Rather, it came into being. It was born when I witnessed a need in my own community of women entrepreneurs.

Before I started Fearless Foundry, I helped business owners with their scaling strategy. If you’ve ever built a business, you know that everything comes down to capital. And the women I was working with didn’t have enough of it. Not because they didn’t have skills. Not because they weren’t working with a viable concept.

Because they were devaluing their work.

The female founders who sought me out for advice and coaching were exiting corporations in search of financial freedom and flexibility. They aimed to use their businesses to make money to pay others and themselves well.

But what I kept seeing was that their flexibility was compromised, because they were overworking themselves and taking on too many clients. There was money—but no time.

The other pattern I saw was women with time on their hands, but a lack of funds. Or others who desperately needed to hire another person in order to grow their business, but couldn’t stretch the budget far enough to make hiring happen.

I believe the way that women handle money is different. There’s a noticeable trend: Women invest in things we care about—whether that’s ethical stocks, green companies or the health and safety of our families.

But talking about money is hard. It’s emotional. It can carry shame and guilt.

That’s why I wanted to begin a conversation by breaking down something simple; digestible: Pricing. By starting with pricing, I can talk about money in a safe way.

Pricing for Prosperity always kicks off by honing in on participant’s growth goals. By getting clear on what they want in a salary, they can aim higher. That’s right—I don’t push people to “be realistic.” I push people to dream bigger.

This might scare you, but we do this together… out loud. It’s called the Big Number activity. It might sound sweat-inducing, but that’s because we’ve all been socialized to think that money is an inappropriate subject. Impolite. Rude.

But you know what hush-hush culture leads to?

Women not advocating for themselves and asking for raises. Women being taken advantage of financially. Women having no grasp of what to charge their clients.

I love standing back and watching course participants fire each other up when declaring their big numbers. I love watching as they push each other higher after hearing what others are dreaming for themselves. It’s uncomfortable at first, but by the end of the session, they’re talking about money in a completely revolutionary way, and their self worth has increased.

Every time I’ve led this activity, there is not a dry eye in the room.

I’ve had past participants tell me that after putting what they learned at Pricing for Prosperity into action, they made more money in one month than they’d made that whole year. I’ve had women tell me they got a new wardrobe and a new apartment, that they were beginning to build a new chapter and a new life for themselves.

It might sound dramatic, but teaching Pricing for Prosperity and witnessing huge shifts in confidence and earning potential has been some of the peak moments of my entire life. I can’t wait to do it again this fall.
