What Is Your Vision? - How Values Are Essential to Your Business Strategy
“Who is running your business, you or your employees?”
My coach’s question jolted me awake, pulling me out of the day-to-day hustle at Fearless Foundry. It was a necessary reminder to reflect on my leadership and ask if I was truly steering the ship toward the destination I envisioned. As the founder of Fearless Foundry, it’s my responsibility to guide the company, and the most important tool I have for that is a clear vision—one built on the solid foundation of our values.
But where does an organizational vision come from?
What makes it inspiring enough to guide us when things get tough?
And most importantly, how do we stay connected to it when the distractions of day-to-day operations take over?
The Origins of Our Vision
The vision for Fearless Foundry was born out of my own dissatisfaction with the limitations of my work in the corporate world.. While working in global business development for a fintech startup, I found myself constantly going “off script”—offering advice that extended beyond numbers, creating connections where I saw synergy, and diving into conversations about purpose and alignment. The restrictive nature of my role couldn’t contain my desire to foster meaningful connections and cultivate purpose-driven businesses.
So, in 2016, I took the leap. Fearless Foundry was founded with the goal of guiding entrepreneurs through their own transformative journeys, ensuring that their businesses were not just profitable but also aligned with their core values. Over time, we developed a set of values that became the spine of our company—alignment, collaboration, curiosity, consciousness, and GSD (aka Get $hit Done). These values inform every decision we make, from the clients we take on to the ways we contribute to the community.
But values aren’t just static ideals; they are the foundation upon which our company’s evolving vision is built.
The Next Era for Fearless Foundry: Realigning Through Our Values
At least once a year, I revisit these values to ensure they remain aligned with our mission and the evolving needs of the world around us. This reflection is critical because it allows me to ask the essential question:
“How are we meant to show up and serve in this next season?"
During our rebrand over the past year, this process brought clarity. As we move into the next era, it’s clear that Fearless Foundry needs to expand its impact, particularly in serving small and minority-owned businesses at scale. We are realigning our services to offer more accessible packages for early-stage founders and small businesses, especially in our local and diverse communities, including our queer community. This shift is rooted in our values of community, collaboration, and consciousness.
Community drives us to focus on clients who are building impactful businesses, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds.
Collaboration ensures that we continue to build meaningful partnerships, creating opportunities for small businesses to access the resources they need to thrive.
Consciousness keeps us aware of the inequities that still exist and fuels our desire to create equitable opportunities for all founders.
This new phase of Fearless Foundry’s journey isn’t just about growth—it’s about impact. It’s about being recognized within our communities as a company that not only cares about entrepreneurship but also contributes meaningfully to the development of businesses that will leave a lasting, positive imprint on the world.
Why Values Should Shape Your Strategic Vision
As you prepare for strategic planning within your own organization, take a moment to pause and reflect:
Are your values driving your vision?
If I was working with you on your brand strategy, I would tell you:
Values are the spine of your business, giving you something to stand for and a way to navigate forward with clarity and confidence.
Revisiting and refining them regularly is essential for any leader who wants to ensure their vision remains aligned with their purpose. Here are a few steps to guide your process:
Revisit Your Core Values: Spend time reconnecting with the deeper why of your business. Ask yourself, "What do we stand for?" and "Are these values still relevant to our current goals?"
Realign Your Vision: Use your values as a filter for decision-making. Does your vision for the next phase of your business align with the values you hold? If not, it’s time to recalibrate. For Fearless Foundry, this meant shifting our focus to making our services more accessible to the clients we want to serve most.
Communicate Your Vision: Once you've redefined your vision, it’s crucial to ensure that your entire team and community are on board. Your values should not just be words on a wall—they need to be lived and breathed in every interaction with your team, clients, and partners.
